Stifling a gasp at the sound, Meredith ducks ahead of him, moving as fast as she can make herself go. It's been such a long day already and she's tired, afraid her footsteps are too loud or she'll drop her sack, that the soldiers will be on them next, that any of a dozen things she can't even imagine will go wrong. The sight of the truck comes as more of a relief than she would have imagined after the day they've had, but she looks back over her shoulder to make sure there hasn't been a change of plans.
